ARTENGINE

Remi has been collaborating with Artengine since early in his career. Artengine is an organization that deepens the practices of artists, designers, and critics around emerging technologies. They always work on cool projects—like photographing a drummer in a public swimming pool—so when Ryan and Remco approached him to develop a video exploring what Artengine is, what they do, who they serve, and how they reach the community, he was excited to jump in.

Artengine, an artist-run futurelab in Ottawa, recently unveiled its new space designed to foster collaboration among artists, designers, technologists, and researchers. To document and share the story behind this creative environment, Artengine partnered with House of Common to produce a comprehensive visual narrative.

Ryan showed Remi an AD tour video, a style he could relate to since he spends a lot of time online watching home tours. When visiting the location, he got a strong Lynne Cohen vibe and leaned into that inspiration for the video. For this project, Matt Delaney and Remi switched roles—Matt directed the scenes while Remi was the DOP. He had a clear vision for how he wanted to shoot this project, and since Matt and Remi always work in a highly collaborative way, their roles tend to be fluid anyway.

The project encompassed high-quality video production, capturing the essence and functionality of the new space. Complementary photography sessions highlighted the architectural details and ambiance, providing a visual tour for the audience. Additionally, behind-the-scenes (BTS) footage was collected to offer insights into the creative processes and collaborations that brought the space to life.

This multimedia approach not only showcases the physical attributes of Artengine's new environment but also emphasizes its role in inspiring innovation and community engagement within the arts and technology sectors. For a visual tour of the Artengine space, you can watch the video.
